For all the discussion surrounding Social Security – on the news, online, at cocktail parties – there are more than a few obscure features of the program that fly under the radar, and that can impact your retirement…check these out:

  • If you think you might have filed for Social Security too early, you may be able to change your mind. Yes, the Social Security Administration gives you a “do over!”
  • You can get Social Security retirement or survivors benefits and work at the same time. There are limits, of course, and when you take the benefits is a factor. But you can still maximize your income in retirement.
  • A divorced spouse who was married for more than 10 years and has not remarried can get spousal benefits from their ex.
  • Your Social Security benefit is calculated on your highest earning years.

The attached Social Security Field Guide from TransAmerica includes some of these secrets as well as tons of other useful information about this federal program. Take a look, and if you have questions about your social security strategy, let’s connect.
