What Made Me Choose This Career Path?
My story isn’t an unfamiliar one. My grandmother suffered from Alzheimer’s and had to move in with my parents. So naturally, this was a very stressful situation for my family.
I always knew my grandmother to be a fiercely independent woman, so it was tough for her to accept the move to my parent’s home. My mom, her daughter-in-law, was now her primary caretaker. As you can imagine, the strain on my mother and my parent’s marriage was almost tangible.
My mother’s feelings of isolation grew as she was too scared to leave the house if my grandmother left the stove on, fell, or worse, wandered off. This fear created a negative feedback loop of more isolation, stress, and a general imbalance in our family dynamics.
In our culture, assisted living facilities and communities were not acceptable. You take care of your own family. Yet, those rules and social parameters are complex when you don’t have a village of people who have the time and resources to dedicate to senior care.
After much strain on the part of my mother and my grandmother’s dementia symptoms increasing, she was placed in a nursing home where she did not receive good care. I could witness my grandmother’s spirit sinking, and she gave up hope. Our family had no resources, no information, and no knowledge of any options at our disposal; to say it was a difficult period in our lives is an understatement.
Fast forward a couple of years – I found myself at a career crossroads when I was directed to Options for Senior Living as a good networking resource. I met with Scott and the team, and after learning what Options had built and what they stood for, I was instantly drawn to being a Certified Placement Expert. However, what resonated with me the most was the ability to guide families and provide resources that my own family did not have access to in our hour of need with my grandmother.
I’m here to help make a difference to any- and everyone who needs it in the Phoenix, Paradise Valley, and Scottsdale areas.
